Skin is the largest organ and its benefits can often be taken for granted. Your skin has six main functions in keeping your body healthy and balanced.

  • Protection: It is your body's first line of defense.
  • Temperature Regulation: Sweating and goosebumps help you regulate temperature.
  • Storage: water and fats
  • Sensation: Keeps you aware of touch, pressure and temperature.
  • Prevent water loss: Skin acts as a barrier to keep water from evaporating.
  • Absorption: What you put on your skin goes into your blood stream.

To ensure your skin is working optimally, you must take good care of it both inside and out. Here are five ways to love your skin and bring out your glow.

1 SLEEP

Your skin heals itself while you sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause reduce the skins ability to repair itself resulting in reduced elasticity, puffy eyes, dark under eye circles and fine lines or wrinkles. Skin cells regenerate, maintaining elasticity and helping to prevent signs of aging. Increased blood flow helps circulate nutrients and protect your skin from daily environmental exposure.

7-9 hours a night is ideal for optimum repair potential. It is not easy to sleep uninterrupted. Here are some tips to help you fall back asleep or for deeper sleep.

  • Use an eye mask
  • Essential oil inhaler with soothing sleep blend (Lavendar, Sweet Orange, Cedarwood)
  • Binaural beats app (set timer 15-30 mins)
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Guided meditation
  • Journal brain dump
  • Rolling with yoga balls

2 Reduce stress

Stress can cause so many issues throughout your body, including your skin. Stress can cause a variety of issues for your skin. Stress can cause breakouts resulting from excess oil production. It can also lead to dry skin since it impairs the skin’s barrier function and reducing water retention. Stress has also been linked to gut health issues which may lead to red, irritated, inflamed skin. A reduction in the skins elasticity can increase signs of aging, especially wrinkles.

Take precautions to proactively reduce your stress levels. Mediation can be calming but also help you keep your youthful glow. Your skin's primary function is to protect your body as a barrier from unwanted elements. Stress can impair the skin's barrier function and put a strain on its ability to repair itself. Keep your stress levels low for soft and supple skin.

3 Self-confidence

The first step to enhancing your natural glow is with confidence. There are no miracle products that fix your skincare concerns over night. Do you dream of having perfect skin and looking like models or social media images? Are you putting unrealistic expectations on your skin? No amount of creams, makeup or the latest gadgets is going to give you glowing skin if you don’t love your skin, just the way it is. If you don’t embrace the skin you’re in, you will always find and focus on the flaws, no matter what.

Glowing skin starts from within. When you love yourself and are fully confident in your own skin, you glow. It is so common to treat others with more love, support and encouragement than you do yourself. Your body tells a story. Maybe you have a scar from birthing your child. Or a scar on your knee from flying out of a wagon on an epic summer day, Maybe you have wrinkles from making funny faces or being expressive.

Embrace all of you and show yourself love. When you feel good, it shows. Daily affirmations or telling yourself “I love you. I am enough.” It may seem uncomfortable at first. Get comfortable loving yourself and make it part of your daily rituals. You want it to become a habit, second nature.

4 Consistent skincare routine

You want results, right? You need a consistent skincare routine. You won’t have clear skin or see an improvement in dryness or texture from occasionally using products, similar to going to the gym twice and expecting toned abs. With plethora of focused skincare products and latest equipment and techniques, it can be hard to find time to be consistent.

Simplify your skincare routine. The faster your routine, the easier it will be to continually care for your skin. My super simple routine includes cleansing with gentle exfoliation, toning and moisturizing. Look for products that do double duty, like a cleanser with gentle exfoliation, or use reusable bamboo pads to gently exfoliate while removing makeup /cleanser. If you have more time, add in a face mask, roller or gua sha.

5 Nourish your skin

Use products with skin nourishing oils and butters. Avoid hot water, harsh ingredients and over exfoliated. Cleansing your skin with hot water can dry out and damage the skin’s barrier function. Aim for warm water to wash away dirt and grime. Use products formulated for gentle exfoliation. High quantities of salicylic acid and can dry out your skin. Nourish your body from the inside with whole foods and plenty of water. Consume food high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Increase cell regeneration and elasticity with collagen.

Moisturize and hydrate your skin before bed. Take advantage of your body's repair process and deepen your skincare routine's benefits. Use skin nourishing products full of antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids. These help repair your skin, protect against free radical damage strengthen and moisturize without stripping your skin of natural oils. Antioxidants can also help protect your skin from the damaging affects of blue light. Protect your skin from the elements.
